Ch 3 he makes me lie down in green pastures

“He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.” (Psalm 23:2)

Sheep are high maintenance creatures

  • The strange thing about sheep is that because of their very makeup it is almost impossible for them to be made to lie down unless four requirements are met. Owing to their timidity they refuse to lie down unless they are free of all fear. Because of the social behavior within a flock, sheep will not lay down unless they are free of all friction with others of their kind. If tormented by flies or parasites, sheep will not lie down. Only when free of these pests can they relax. Lastly sheep will not lie down as long as they feel in need of finding food. They must be free from hunger. (42)

Sheep are anxious and fearful - they have no defense

  • As long as there is even the slightest suspicion of danger from dogs, coyotes, cougars, bears or other enemies the sheep stand up ready to flee for their lives. They have little or no means of self-defense. They are helpless, timid, feeble creatures whose only recourse is to run. (43)

  • In the course of time I came to realize that nothing so quieted and reassured the sheep as to see me in the field. There is nothing like Christ’s presence to dispel the fear, the panic, the terror of the unknown. (44)

  • It is the humble heart walking quietly and contentedly in the close and intimate companionship of Christ that is at rest, that can relax, simply glad to lie down and let the world go by. (49)

1. How do we compare to sheep? What does it take for us to relax?

“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God,which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:4-7)

Ch 4 he leads me beside quiet waters

“He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.” (Psalm 23:2)

Rise Early

  • The good shepherd, the diligent manager, makes sure that his sheep can be out and grazing on this dew-drenched vegetation. (61)

  • In the. Christian life it is of more than passing significance to observe that those who are often the most serene, most confident and able to cope with life's complexities are those who rise early each day to feed on God's word. (61)

“Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” (Luke 5:15)

2. What have you tried to do to ensure daily time with God? What has worked and what hasn’t? Why?

Apply

In response to today’s lesson, we can:

  • Remember that only Christ can free us from fear and give us peace so that we can lie down

  • Know that without time spent with God daily, lives challenges will quickly overwhelm us.
